Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will battle familiar rivals Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship on Sunday, with the regional title and qualification for next year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations at stake.
The encounter will be a repeat of the teams’ Group B meeting, which Burkina Faso won 2-0. Nigeria will therefore be looking to avenge their only defeat of the tournament and end the competition on a high.
Head coach Abdul Maikaba believes the earlier meeting will give his team valuable insight ahead of the final.
“This is an opportunity for us to redeem ourselves, having lost to Burkina Faso in the group stage,” Maikaba said.
He added that Nigeria now have a better understanding of Burkina Faso’s style and will seek to exploit their weaknesses while maximising their own strengths
Nigeria began their campaign impressively, defeating Ghana 4-2 before recording a convincing 3-0 victory over Togo.
However, their final Group B match ended in a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso, leaving the Flying Eagles second in the group with six points, one behind the Young Stallions.
Nigeria bounced back in the semi-final, holding hosts Côte d’Ivoire to a 2-2 draw after extra time before winning 4-3 on penalties.
Goalkeeper Clinton Lawani was the hero, saving two penalties to send Nigeria into the final.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, have remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. They drew 1-1 with Ghana before defeating Togo 3-1 and Nigeria 2-0 in the group stage.
The Young Stallions continued their impressive run with a 2-0 victory over Niger in the semi-final.
Sunday’s final provides Nigeria with an opportunity to put their group-stage defeat behind them and reclaim regional supremacy.
The Flying Eagles will need to improve their intensity and defensive concentration against a Burkina Faso side that has already demonstrated its ability to exploit weaknesses in the Nigerian team.
Players such as Abdulmuiz Adeleke, Oraro Lucky, Habila Simeon and goalkeeper Lawani will be expected to play key roles as Maikaba’s side seeks a third WAFU B U-20 title.
Nigeria have enjoyed considerable success in recent editions of the WAFU B U-20 Championship.
The Flying Eagles won the title in 2022 after defeating Benin Republic 3-1 in the final in Niamey and successfully defended the trophy in 2024 with a 2-1 victory over Ghana in Lomé.
They will now be seeking a third consecutive regional crown.
Burkina Faso, on the other hand, are still searching for their first WAFU B U-20 title. Their only previous appearance in the final came in 2018, when they lost 2-0 to Senegal in Togo.
Nigeria also have unfinished business after losing 1-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in last year’s competition.
The final carries significance beyond the regional championship. Victory will see Nigeria crowned 2026 WAFU B U-20 champions and secure qualification for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Ghana.
Burkina Faso, who have yet to taste defeat in the tournament, will be aiming to complete an unbeaten campaign with their first regional title.
For the Flying Eagles, however, Sunday’s clash offers an opportunity to claim the trophy, avenge their group-stage loss and strengthen Nigeria’s proud record in the competition.
