Senior officials of Libya’s eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) attended the funeral of military intelligence chief Fawzi al-Mansouri in Benghazi on Tuesday, a day after he was killed in a car bombing.
Al-Mansouri was killed when an explosive device attached to his vehicle detonated as he was leaving a local mosque on Monday night, according to the LNA.
The funeral was attended by senior military and security officials, including Khaled and Saddam Haftar, the sons of LNA commander Khalifa Haftar.
The LNA described al-Mansouri as a martyr and condemned the bombing. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects.
Al-Mansouri was a senior figure in the LNA and had been involved in military operations against jihadist groups in eastern Libya, including Islamic State militants.
He was also involved in the LNA’s 2019 offensive against forces controlling Tripoli.
His killing has raised fresh security concerns in Benghazi and comes amid continuing political and military divisions between rival power centres in eastern and western Libya.
The authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assassination and determine who was behind the attack.
