Three officers of the Uganda Prisons Service have been injured after unknown assailants attacked Kyegegwa Government Prison in western Uganda in the early hours of Friday.
The attack occurred at about 1:00 a.m., when the assailants reportedly targeted officers serving as sentries during the night shift. The attackers managed to steal two service firearms, each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
The injured officers were identified as Sergeant Warden Titus Kalisa, Sergeant Wardress Susan Margret Nakuya and Warden Joshua Odongo. They were taken to Kyegegwa General Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Despite the breach, prison authorities confirmed that no inmates escaped during the incident.
Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja said other security agencies were immediately alerted and investigations had begun. Joint security operations are now underway to track down the attackers and recover the stolen weapons.
Authorities have not yet established the motive for the attack or disclosed the exact number of people involved. No arrests have been reported so far.
The incident has raised fresh security concerns around correctional facilities in Uganda, particularly following the theft of firearms and ammunition during the attack.
