Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called for greater African ownership of the continent’s energy sector.
She said stronger local energy companies and technical institutions are needed to help Africa unlock the full potential of its energy resources.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang made the call at a high-level gathering in Accra on Monday, ahead of the 2026 Africa Oil Week, organised by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation and ExxonMobil.
The Vice President stressed that Africa must play a greater role in developing its energy resources and building the industries required to support the continent’s growing population.
According to her, stronger local participation in the energy sector would also help create jobs and expand economic opportunities for Africans.
Her comments come as African countries continue to explore ways of strengthening local capacity and ensuring that the continent derives greater economic benefits from its energy resources.
