Carlos Queiroz has been reappointed as head coach of Ghana’s senior men’s national team, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced.
The 73-year-old Portuguese coach returns to the Black Stars after initially taking charge in April and guiding the team to the last 32 of this year’s FIFA World Cup, where Ghana suffered a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
Queiroz appeared to announce his departure on social media shortly after the defeat. However, following internal discussions, the GFA has opted to bring him back for another spell in charge.
The football body did not disclose the duration of Queiroz’s new contract but said he would lead the Black Stars into what it described as “a successful new phase on the international stage.”
“The GFA believes Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter,” the association said in a statement.
Queiroz has extensive experience in international football, having previously managed Portugal, Iran and Egypt at major tournaments. He has also had spells in charge of South Africa, Colombia and Qatar, in addition to serving as an assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Reacting to his reappointment, Queiroz said he was proud and honoured to continue working with Ghana.
“Serving Ghana is far more than coaching a football team. It is a privilege, a responsibility and a mission to honour one of Africa’s greatest football nations and its incredible and passionate football people,” he said.
“Our ambition is clear: improve every day, unite the nation, make Ghana stronger and fight for every victory with passion, humility and pride. The mission continues.”
Queiroz will begin his second spell in charge with Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which is scheduled to begin later this month.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia, although the dates and venues for their opening two fixtures are yet to be announced.
