The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for two weeks to allow urgent rehabilitation and maintenance works.
The Federal Ministry of Works announced the closure on Friday, September 4, saying the bridge will be shut to traffic from Monday, September 7, until Monday, September 21, 2026.
The ministry said the decision became necessary because of the deteriorating condition of the bridge’s carriageway and damage to some structural components caused by vandalism.
The repair works will include the removal of deteriorated asphalt and the laying of a new asphalt wearing course.
The ministry also plans to install solar-powered streetlights and closed-circuit television cameras to improve security and monitor activities around the bridge.
During the closure, motorists have been directed to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, and other destinations beyond.
The Federal Ministry of Works said traffic-control personnel, safety barriers and diversion signs will be deployed to guide motorists and reduce disruption.
The ministry advised motorists to plan their journeys ahead, allow additional travel time and obey all traffic and diversion instructions.
It said construction activities will continue during the day and at night to ensure the emergency works are completed within the scheduled two-week period.
