Nigeria’s Falconets will begin their campaign for a maiden FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title when they face Spain in their opening Group F fixture in Poland on Monday.
The two-time runners-up will take on the 2022 champions at the Arena Sosnowiec, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm local time.
Nigeria enter the tournament with confidence after an encouraging buildup, recording a win and a draw in their final two friendly matches against hosts Poland and South Korea respectively.
The Falconets will continue their group-stage campaign against China on Thursday, September 10, before rounding off their fixtures against New Caledonia on Sunday, September 13.
Monday’s clash will be the third meeting between Nigeria and Spain at the U-20 Women’s World Cup. The Falconets won the first encounter 2-1 in the 2016 group stage, while Spain secured a 2-1 quarter-final victory in 2018 before finishing as runners-up.
Nigeria are among the most consistent teams in the history of the competition, having qualified for every edition. They have finished runners-up twice, losing to Germany in the 2010 and 2014 finals.
The West Africans have also finished fourth once and reached the quarter-finals on five occasions, while their only group-stage exits came in 2002 and 2016.
Spain, meanwhile, have emerged as a major force in women’s youth football. After missing five consecutive editions, La Rojita reached the quarter-finals in 2016, finished runners-up in 2018, won their first title in 2022 and returned to the quarter-finals in 2024.
The Spanish side will also draw confidence from the continued rise of women’s football in the country, with the senior national team currently world champions.
With both teams boasting impressive records at youth level, the opening Group F encounter is expected to provide a stern test for the Falconets.
Nigeria will hope to secure a positive result against the reigning champions and make a strong start to their bid to finally win the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
