The Kenyan government has given foreign nationals operating small-scale businesses 90 days to regularise their immigration and business status.
The directive was contained in a statement signed by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed on Tuesday, following concerns from Kenyan traders over the growing involvement of foreigners in informal businesses.
President William Ruto said the government has a responsibility to protect economic opportunities for Kenyan citizens, particularly in the micro and small-enterprise sector, while safeguarding the rights of foreigners legally living and working in the country.
The government said the 90-day regularisation exercise will cover immigration status, work permits, business registration and operating licences, in consultation with affected embassies.
After the deadline, the relevant laws will be strictly enforced.
The government also warned against harassment, intimidation or violence against foreign nationals and their businesses, stressing that concerns over economic opportunities do not justify discrimination or lawlessness.
It said Kenya would remain open to lawful foreign investment while protecting opportunities for its citizens.
