A police officer has been killed and five teachers kidnapped after armed men attacked a teacher training centre in Wum, Cameroon.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, about 80 kilometres north of Bamenda, the capital of the country’s Northwest Region.
Northwest Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique said the attackers infiltrated the training centre before abducting five teachers.
According to the governor, a police officer who attempted to intervene was shot dead by the assailants, who then fled with the teachers to an unknown location.
Security forces have launched a search for the attackers and the abducted teachers.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks linked to the long-running conflict in Cameroon’s English-speaking Northwest and Southwest regions.
The crisis began in 2016 following protests by teachers and lawyers against perceived marginalisation by the predominantly French-speaking government. Separatists declared an armed struggle in 2017.
The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths, kidnappings and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.
