The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on another nationwide strike if the Federal and state governments fail to address outstanding salary, welfare and implementation issues affecting university lecturers.
The union issued the warning after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) held at its National Secretariat at the University of Abuja on September 5, 2026.
ASUU said the issues at the centre of the dispute include the poor implementation of the December 2025 agreement reached with the Federal Government, three-and-a-half months of withheld salaries from the previous administration, unremitted third-party deductions and concerns over university autonomy.
The ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, said the union would not accept responsibility for any disruption to academic activities if the outstanding issues were not resolved.
He said that apart from recent efforts by the Federal Ministry of Education to pay outstanding salaries owed to lecturers in Federal Universities of Agriculture, there had been no sustained efforts to address the union’s concerns.
Piwuna said lecturers had continued to face uncertainty over the payment of their monthly salaries, with many forced to engage their respective vice-chancellors over when and how much they would receive.
He warned that ASUU-NEC could direct its members to commence a nationwide strike within the shortest possible time if immediate and concrete measures were not taken to resolve the issues affecting the welfare of university lecturers.
The union urged the Federal and state governments to fully implement the agreements reached with ASUU and address all outstanding financial and welfare concerns to prevent another disruption of academic activities in public universities.
