Luke Fleurs, a 24-year-old defender for Kaizer Chiefs, was shot and killed during a carjacking in Johannesburg.
While Luke Fleurs was at a Roodepoort gas station on Wednesday night, he was shot and killed by robbers who were trying to steal his car.
According to Mavela Masondo, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service, Fleurs was approached by two armed suspects who told him to exit his car before shooting him.
As soon as they arrived at the hospital, they declared him dead. No arrests have been made as of yet, although it is reported that one of the suspects drove off in the car.
Fleurs, a Cape Town native, played for SuperSport United before attending the Ubuntu Football Academy.
After leaving SuperSport at the end of the previous season, he signed a free transfer to Chiefs, however he hasn’t yet made an appearance for the Soweto giants.
“It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg,” Chiefs said in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
“The SAPS are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course.”
On its website, Kaiser Chiefs describes Fleurs as a “classy defender” with “great technical abilities”.
