Hundreds of residents in Imota Local Council Development Area gathered as Nigeria’s Speaker Tajudeen Abbas inaugurated a new 80-bed maternal and child hospital in Imota, Lagos.

Funded by House of Representatives member Babajimi Benson and constructed by the Office of Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the hospital in Imota reflects the government’s steadfast dedication to the health and well-being of Nigerians, according to Speaker Abbas.

“The commissioning of the 80-bed hospital signifies a significant step towards addressing the disparities in healthcare accessibility and quality, symbolising the collective aspirations for a Nigeria where quality healthcare is a right for every citizen. The hospital stands as a beacon of hope and a crucial resource in the ongoing efforts to improve the health and well-being of the community”, he said.

The Imota hospital proposal became a reality because of Benson’s unwavering advocacy and perseverance, which was praised by the speaker.

He said that Benson embodies the spirit of service and dedication that all legislators and public servants should strive for, and he praised Benson for his commitment to the needs and welfare of the constituents.

In his discussion of the problems confronting Nigeria’s healthcare system, Abbas emphasised the lack of proper infrastructure, the overcrowding of clinics and hospitals, and the uneven distribution of high-quality healthcare.

Highlighting the critical shortage of qualified healthcare professionals, encompassing doctors, nurses, and specialists, aggravated by an attempted brain drain, the speaker emphasised the gravity of this issue affecting the sector. Despite these challenges, he highlighted the purposeful establishment of a new hospital tailored for women and children, strategically designed to address vulnerabilities within the population.

The newly commissioned hospital in Imota, equipped with cutting-edge facilities, aims to deliver essential maternal and child health services, combat diseases, and respond to emergencies. This initiative is anticipated to significantly improve the well-being of the constituency and the broader community of Lagos.

Encouraging support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the speaker emphasised the collaborative efforts of the legislative arm with major stakeholders to bring tangible benefits of democracy to the people.

Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, assured residents that President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda would positively impact citizens across all strata. Emphasising the commitment of the Federal Government, she underscored the provision of basic infrastructure to spur development throughout the country.

The fully-equipped health centre, specialising in maternal and child health services, was presented as a crucial step in reducing childbirth-related mortality rates. The community was urged to maximise the facility and ensure proper maintenance.

Reiterating his dedication to further developmental projects, Benson expressed gratitude to Princess Orelope-Adefulire and constituents for contributing to the realisation of the healthcare project.

Commending Benson and Princess Orelope-Adefulire for choosing Imota as the project location, the Chairman of Imota Local Council Development Area, Wasiu Agoro, predicted that it would enhance healthcare delivery for residents and those in the surrounding areas.
