Somalia’s Parliament has given the green light to a significant defense pact with Turkey, marking a pivotal moment in bolstering the nation’s maritime security.
Over the next decade, Turkey will not only provide arms and training to Somali naval forces but also deploy its own vessels in Somali waters.
The sweeping agreement, hailed by analysts, aims to fortify Somalia’s defenses against terrorism, piracy, illegal fishing, and the unlawful disposal of toxic waste.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi emphasised that the accord addresses these pressing concerns, alleviating fears that have long plagued the region.
In tandem with this development, Ethiopia has entered into a contentious agreement with the self-declared republic of Somaliland, further heightening tensions between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa.
Somalia, asserting Somaliland as integral to its territory, accuses Ethiopia of encroaching on its sovereignty through this agreement, underscoring the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the Horn of Africa.
