The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a security advisory to Nigerians living in Iran and neighbouring Gulf states amid escalating military tensions in the region.

In a statement released on Saturday, signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is “closely monitoring the evolving and volatile situation in the Middle East, specifically regarding the military action reportedly undertaken by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions by Iran in some Gulf countries.”

The ministry advised Nigerians in the affected areas to remain extremely vigilant and avoid locations considered strategic, military, or government sites, which could be potential flashpoints. Citizens were also urged to limit non-essential travel, avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, and comply with all instructions from local authorities.

Nigerian diplomatic missions in Tehran, as well as in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, have been placed on high alert to provide consular support and facilitate communication for citizens in the region.

“The safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains the top priority of the Federal Government,” the statement said, adding that further updates would be issued as the situation develops.

The advisory follows Saturday’s strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian cities, which resulted in explosions and smoke columns in Tehran. US President Donald Trump described the operations as targeting “imminent threats” from Iran, while Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz called them “preventive strikes.”

International bodies have expressed concern over the escalation. The African Union called for restraint, warning that the conflict could threaten global stability, while the European Union, through European Council President António Costa, described the situation as “greatly concerning” and emphasized close coordination with regional partners.

The Nigerian government also urged all parties involved to seek de-escalation and return to negotiations to preserve peace and stability.
