In response to the lingering issue of unpaid salaries, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have jointly declared a 7-day warning strike.

The focal point of this industrial action is the demand for the release of four months’ worth of withheld salaries for their members, a grievance stemming from the fallout of the 2022 nationwide strike.

This significant decision was a culmination of deliberations within the joint action committee of both unions, following a meeting held over the weekend in Akure.

President Mohammed Ibrahim of SSANU took the lead in conveying this stance during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, where he shared the resolutions through a communiqué.

Ibrahim emphasised that the choice to initiate the warning strike was not made lightly; rather, it emerged as a final recourse. Despite numerous protest letters and communications with the Federal Government, these efforts proved futile in securing the rightful payment of the withheld salaries.

The unions are now leveraging this 7-day warning strike as a strategic measure to draw attention to their plight and advocate for the financial rights of their members.
