The Olympic flame is set to make its grand entrance in France on Wednesday, kicking off a meticulously planned ceremony expected to draw a crowd of 150,000 spectators.
This event serves as a significant trial for organizers and security forces in preparation for the upcoming 2024 Paris Games. The transfer of the flame onto French soil, taking place at the southern port of Marseille, initiates a remarkable 12,000-kilometer torch relay journey across mainland France and its distant overseas territories.
Amid ongoing concerns regarding ticket pricing disputes and security issues, organizers are banking on this inaugural public spectacle to ignite enthusiasm for the highly-anticipated “iconic” Olympics, just 79 days away. As the city of Paris gears up to host the opening ceremony on July 26, it marks a historic occasion, with the city’s last hosting stint dating back to 1924, following previous editions in 1900. France holds a pivotal role in the modern Olympic movement, tracing back to Pierre de Coubertin’s revival of the ancient Greek Games’ spirit in the 19th century.
After the recent Olympics marred by challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and corruption allegations, the Paris Games symbolize a crucial moment of redemption and celebration for the global sporting community.
