Marc Brys has been replaced as head coach of Cameroon without overseeing a single game following a heated exchange with the president of the country’s football federation (Fecafoot), Samuel Eto’o.

Martin Ndtoungou was named interim boss of the Indomitable Lions after an emergency meeting of Fecafoot’s executive committee. The governing body cited “disrespectful comments” by Brys, “an outright refusal to collaborate,” and “inappropriate behavior” by the coach and his assistants as reasons for the replacement.

Brys was appointed in early April by Cameroon’s sports ministry, but Fecafoot expressed “great astonishment” at the unilateral decision. Eto’o, who had his list of higher-profile candidates, was absent during Brys’ unveiling. The two met at Fecafoot’s offices in Yaounde, where videos showed a fiery exchange before Brys abruptly left.

Eto’o, president of Fecafoot since December 2021, was also seen arguing with a sports ministry official. The ministry has yet to comment on this power struggle with Fecafoot.

This drama unfolds ahead of next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Cameroon will host Cape Verde on 8 June and travel to Angola on 11 June. Ndtoungou, 66, is set to announce his squad for these matches during a Thursday news conference.

Cameroon currently tops Group D with four points from two games. The group winners will secure a place at the finals in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
