The Proteas of South Africa kicked off their T20 World Cup campaign with a convincing six-wicket win against Sri Lanka, highlighting concerns over the drop-in pitches at the New York ground.

Sri Lanka struggled to a mere 77 runs, their lowest in T20 history, with only three batters reaching double figures. Anrich Nortje shone for South Africa, claiming career-best T20 figures of 4-7, supported by Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj who took two wickets each.
Despite the modest target, South Africa’s batsmen approached the chase cautiously on the challenging pitch, securing victory with 22 balls to spare. Quinton de Kock scored 20 runs, while Tristan Stubbs scored a patient innings of 13 off 28 deliveries.

Wanindu Hasaranga briefly threatened South Africa by dismissing their top scorers, ending with figures of 2-22. Heinrich Klaasen’s unbeaten 19, alongside David Miller’s six not out, sealed the win for the Proteas.
Reflecting on the match, Klaasen praised the ground staff for their efforts in preparing the field and hoped for improved pitch conditions as the tournament progressed.
