Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has announced that his team will employ a different game strategy for their clash against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa today.

Unlike the pattern used at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, George aims to revitalize the team’s World Cup ambitions. Currently, the Eagles sit third with two points, trailing behind Rwanda and South Africa, making a win crucial.

Finidi George, facing his first competitive game as Eagles boss, acknowledged the South African team’s strong performance at AFCON, where Nigeria narrowly triumphed on penalties. The former Enyimba coach expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and ability to secure a win.

“AFCON is behind us now. We knew how challenging that game was, but winning it was crucial. This World Cup Qualifier is a different ball game, and we will play differently than we did at AFCON,” George stated at his press conference in Uyo. “I am confident in our abilities and what we can achieve tomorrow (today). We are determined to win and qualify for the next World Cup, and we will strive for that victory.

“Our training has been excellent, and the players are fully prepared. They understand the task ahead and are eagerly awaiting the start of the game. We have no doubts about their capacity. They know it’s a must-win game, and we will approach it with that mindset.”

George also confirmed the readiness of Samuel Chukwueze and Chidozie Awaziem, who had recently dealt with a knock and stomach issues, respectively. Both players have recovered and are in good shape for the match.

“All the players are ready. Samuel Chukwueze had a knock during Wednesday’s training but has since trained without pain. Chidozie Awaziem had a minor stomach upset, but he is fine now,” George added.

The head coach emphasized his commitment to scouting the NPFL for quality players to join the senior national team. “We have invited three players from the domestic league, and I believe that is sufficient for now. The criterion is to continue monitoring the league to identify those good enough for the team. It’s a gradual process, and we want to encourage domestic league players, knowing their time will come too.

“We will bring in players capable of adding value to the senior national team,” Finidi concluded.
