NIGERIA: Bill to Repeal NIMC Act 2007 Passes Second Reading in Senate

A bill to repeal the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2007 has passed its second reading in the Senate.

The proposed bill aims to establish a National Identity Database, tasking the NIMC with maintaining this database, registering individuals, and issuing identity credentials. The bill which was Initially read on June 5, the bill was sponsored by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin on Tuesday.

The bill also aims to streamline the sharing of personal data, incorporate robust data protection measures to safeguard individuals’ privacy and confidentiality, and foster trust among citizens in the handling of their information.
