Belarus’ First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lukashevich, announced the signing of a five-year action plan with Nigeria to enhance agricultural cooperation.
The agreement was revealed on his X page on Saturday, June 8, 2024.
Although Belarus was not among Nigeria’s top ten trading partners in 2023, according to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, this move signals Belarus’ intention to strengthen its presence in the Nigerian market.
In 2021, Belarus exported $5.6 million worth of goods to Nigeria, including oil products, potash fertilizers, printing works, and polycarboxylic acids, according to the Belarus Embassy in Nigeria.
Lukashevich expressed his enthusiasm for the new agreement, despite not disclosing specific details of the action plan. He assured that the collaboration would be mutually beneficial, tweeting, “Glad to welcome Minister @SenatorAKyari from @NGfmafs in Belarus. We signed a good document to expand our cooperation in the agricultural sector. We continue to promote the relationship between Belarus and Nigeria for the benefit of our peoples.”
