Operatives from the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 127 suspected internet fraudsters in Ondo State.

The suspects were apprehended during an early morning sting operation at a ‘Yahoo Party’ held simultaneously at Signature and Abah Clubs in Akure on Saturday, June 8, 2024. The party was initially scheduled for Wednesday, June 5, 2024, but was moved to Saturday to evade EFCC security and intelligence networks.

Items recovered from the suspects include ten exotic cars, phones, laptops, motorcycles, wristwatches, and numerous incriminating documents. The suspects have provided useful information to investigators, and they will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.

In response to the raid, Hon. Abiola Makinde, the lawmaker representing Ondo East/West Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, condemned the EFCC’s actions. He criticized the raid on nightclubs and lounges in Akure, describing it as an invasion of the privacy of innocent citizens.

Makinde, who also chairs the House Committee on Human Rights, expressed his concerns through a statement by his media aide, Moshood Alli. He found the EFCC’s raid of Signatures Club particularly disturbing. After contacting the team leader involved in the raid, Makinde was informed that the operation was based on orders and an intelligence report.

The lawmaker urged residents to remain calm while the matter is investigated and resolved. He emphasized the importance of the EFCC adhering to human rights principles while combating financial crimes.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as Nigeria’s premier anti-graft agency, has a critical role in combating financial crimes. However, it is imperative that in the pursuit of justice, the EFCC adheres strictly to the principles of human rights,” Makinde stated.
