Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, announced on Wednesday that President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of Ibadan Airport.

Governor Makinde disclosed this development while hosting the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Baba Abubakar, at the Executive Chamber in the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

He outlined that the airport upgrade will include constructing a new terminal, expanding the runway, and adding other structural features. The project will be managed by experts to ensure it meets international standards.

Highlighting the importance of this upgrade, Governor Makinde noted that over the past five years, his administration has been focused on revitalizing the state’s economy. The enhancement of the Ibadan Airport is seen as a central component of this economic expansion agenda.

Additionally, the governor emphasised his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, citing the ongoing investment in the 110-kilometre Ibadan Circular Road.

He also mentioned that the administration is considering the Air Force’s request for land for its post-retirement housing scheme along the Circular Road corridor.

“We have been in discussions with the Presidency and received a positive response earlier this week. The President has graciously approved my request for the Ibadan Airport upgrade,” said Governor Makinde. “I will be in Abuja soon to finalise the approval documents, and within three weeks, we will begin the project, which includes expanding the runway and building a new terminal.”

Since assuming office, Governor Makinde’s administration has prioritised education, agriculture, health, and economic expansion. He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Air Staff for the cooperation of Air Force personnel with other security agencies in maintaining security in Oyo State.

The Air Force has played a crucial role in internal security, working closely with Operation Burst. Governor Makinde reaffirmed his commitment to working with the Air Force to complete the Air Force Base in Ajia, Ibadan, and to improve roads in the vicinity to facilitate the movement of personnel and equipment.

In response, Air Marshal Abubakar praised Governor Makinde as a visionary leader and thanked him for his support. He acknowledged the governor’s focus on economic development and security, noting the acquisition of 60 hectares for the Air Force Base at Ajia and the provision of operational vehicles.

He urged the governor to expedite the completion of the 10km Ajia-Airport Road to support Air Force activities, assuring continued cooperation and mutual support.
