The United States has congratulated the people of South Sudan as they mark their independence on Tuesday, July 9.

In a statement by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the top U.S. diplomat called on leaders of the East African nation “to take the steps necessary to establish a democratic, just, and peaceful society.”

He “urged the transitional government to start using public financial resources transparently for the good of all the people of South Sudan.”

South Sudan became the world’s newest country in 2011 after breaking away from Sudan following decades of civil war, which claimed the lives of more than two million people
