The Lagos State Government has announced stringent measures to streamline commercial bus operations on the Lekki-Epe corridor, effective October 1, 2024.

Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos on Transportation, revealed in a statement released on Sunday, July 14, 2024, that only Danfo buses meeting Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) standards will be permitted to operate as mid-capacity buses on this key transportation route.

This initiative aligns with the planned introduction of mass transit buses and the mandate that only VIS-compliant Korope minibuses will provide First Mile Last Mile services on interior roads from Obalende/CMS to Ajah, specifically Eleko.

Giwa emphasised that these measures mark the initial phase of the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), aimed at restructuring commercial bus operations to improve public commuting along the Lekki-Epe axis.

“The primary objective of the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) is to overhaul commercial bus operations,” Giwa stated. “Under this pilot project, mass transit buses will be introduced on the Lekki-Epe corridor. Danfo buses meeting VIS standards will operate as mid-capacity buses, while Korope minibuses, also compliant with VIS standards, will serve the First Mile Last Mile services from Obalende/CMS to Ajah (specifically Eleko).”

To ensure compliance and safety, both Danfo and Korope buses will undergo rigorous roadworthiness checks. Furthermore, drivers will undergo professional training at the state’s driving institute to enhance their skills and ensure adherence to road safety and passenger service standards.
