The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has dismissed claims of setting specific minimum cutoff marks for entry into higher education institutions across Nigeria.

In a statement posted on its official X account on Thursday, JAMB refuted rumours suggesting that it had established cutoff scores of 100 for polytechnics and colleges of education, and 140 for universities.

“There is no such thing as a ‘cut-off mark’ in the admission process to tertiary institutions in Nigeria. What exists are minimum tolerable scores determined by individual institutions,” the Board clarified.

This clarification comes a day after public statements suggested that JAMB had introduced a minimum cutoff point of 100 for polytechnics and colleges of education and 140 for universities. The confusion stemmed from remarks made by Professor Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar, during the 2024 Policy meeting held in Abuja. The meeting, attended by Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education, Vice Chancellors, registrars, and rectors of universities, was intended to discuss various aspects of the admission process.

JAMB’s statement aims to address and dispel any misunderstandings regarding the admission criteria for higher education institutions.
