On Wednesday, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume held a closed-door meeting with over 40 ministers from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet to discuss the proposed nationwide protest against economic hardship by Nigerian youths.
The meeting included key figures such as Nyesom Wike (FCT), Yusuf Tuggar (Foreign Affairs), Zephaniah Jisalo (Special Duties), Tahir Mamman (Education), and Abubakar Bagudu (Budget and Planning). Other notable attendees were Wale Edun (Finance), Mohammed Idris (Information), Bello Matawalle (Defence), David Umahi (Works), and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

President Tinubu had previously appealed to Nigerians to postpone the ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest planned for August. The protest, which is gaining momentum on social media, aims to address widespread economic hardships, including soaring prices of food and basic commodities. This economic crisis has been exacerbated by the government’s recent policies, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of forex windows.
The protest is set to take place across all states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The organizers of the protest remain anonymous.
