The Federal Government, under the leadership of Senator George Akume, CON, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has inaugurated a 10-member Inter-Ministerial Committee to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling granting financial autonomy to Local Governments in Nigeria.
The judgment, delivered on July 11, 2024, marks a significant step toward ensuring that local governments operate independently, without interference from state authorities.
The committee is chaired by the SGF, Senator George Akume, and includes the following key members:

Attorney General of the Federation & Minister of Justice (Member)
Hon. Minister of Budget & Economic Planning (Member)

The committee’s mandate is to ensure the full implementation of the financial autonomy of local governments, in accordance with the Constitution, which recognizes them as the third tier of government. This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and empowering local governance across the nation.
