Edo State Deputy Governor, Marvellous Godwins Omobayo, has affirmed that he remains the legitimate Deputy Governor and continues to perform his official duties outlined by the Nigerian Constitution.

Omobayo made this statement on Thursday during a solidarity visit from the leadership and members of the three recognized transport unions in Edo State.

He emphasized that the ongoing legal disputes regarding his office have not distracted him from his responsibilities and that he remains committed to supporting Governor Godwin Obaseki in advancing the economic prosperity and transformation of Edo State.

Omobayo expressed gratitude to the unions—National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and Edo State Drivers Welfare Scheme—for their unwavering support since he assumed office and their loyalty to Governor Obaseki.

RTEAN Chairman, Comrade Monday Orhue, and NURTW Chairman, Chief Odion Olaye, who spoke during the visit, reaffirmed their total support for Governor Obaseki and passed a vote of confidence in Omobayo as the legitimate and recognized Deputy Governor of Edo State. They also expressed optimism that the Obaseki-led administration would conclude its tenure successfully.

It would be recalled that on Tuesday, the Court of Appeal in Abuja dismissed an appeal by the Edo State House of Assembly, confirming that Comrade Philip Shaibu remains the Deputy Governor of Edo State. The court also invalidated the appointment of Omobayo Godwin, who had been named the new Deputy Governor in place of Shaibu.
