Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, is in critical condition at a Kenyan hospital after allegedly being set on fire by her former boyfriend.
The attack, which occurred at her home in Endebess, a small town in western Kenya, left her with severe burns covering more than 75% of her body, according to police reports.
Cheptegei, who competed in the recent Paris Olympics, had been training in Kenya when the incident occurred. Neighbors reportedly rescued her after hearing a quarrel between her and the alleged attacker outside their house. During the altercation, the man was seen pouring a liquid, suspected to be petrol, on Cheptegei before igniting the fire.
The suspect also sustained serious burns and both are currently receiving treatment at Moi Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
