The Ogun State government, through its Environmental Protection Agency, has sealed five industries for violating environmental laws and endangering local communities. The Chairman of the Ogun State Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, Farook Akintunde, announced the closures in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Sunday.
The affected companies include Nixim Paper Limited, Long Xiang Aluminum in Sagamu, New Shidai Manufacturing Limited in Mowe, and two unregistered companies in the Ogere axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
These actions were taken after the Environmental Protection Agency received complaints from nearby communities about the discharge of untreated wastewater by these companies. Despite receiving a Stop Work Order, the firms continued operations, leading to further environmental degradation.
Akintunde emphasized that the companies lacked Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP), which are mandatory for preventing harmful wastewater discharge. In response, the state government took decisive action to protect public health.
Dr. Oluwadare Kehinde, Special Adviser to the Governor on the State Environmental Protection Agency, affirmed that the state would continue enforcing strict environmental standards. He added that the two unregistered companies must complete proper registration and meet operational requirements before resuming business.
