President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned the disbursement of N108 billion to the 36 states of Nigeria to address the growing challenges posed by flooding and other natural disasters.
This announcement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja during a meeting with Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen. Shettima described the situation in Maiduguri, Borno State, as a “national calamity.”
“The President has demonstrated his commitment to partnering with the states in tackling these issues,” Shettima said. “Recently, he approved the release of N3 billion to each state, ensuring all regions are involved in the effort to address these challenges.”
In addition to discussing the relief measures, Shettima commended Tajudeen for his leadership in the National Assembly, noting his ability to maintain stability despite the fact that nearly 70 percent of the members are newly elected.
“There is significant stability in the House of Representatives, and we must acknowledge your leadership in achieving this. You remain a crucial part of our democratic journey,” the Vice President added, stressing the importance of harmonious relationships among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaker Tajudeen, in turn, expressed condolences to Shettima, President Tinubu, and the people of Borno State, pledging that the National Assembly would support the affected communities.
“We in the National Assembly are committed to providing whatever assistance is necessary. We share your pain and concerns and stand with you through this process. We will ensure that palliatives are provided to help those affected recover and resume their normal lives,” Tajudeen assured.
