Several students of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, were trapped when a storey building on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, known for student housing, collapsed following heavy rainfall on Saturday morning.

According to reports, a university rescue team has successfully freed several occupants, many of whom sustained serious injuries and were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.

One individual, however, remains trapped beneath the rubble. A student witness, speaking anonymously, revealed that the trapped victim had been able to make a distress call from inside the collapsed structure, and rescue efforts are still underway to locate and free them.

The Dean of Students from UNIBEN is currently on the scene, coordinating the rescue operation with the university’s team. As of the time of this report, the university has yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the collapse or the exact number of victims involved.
