In a special message to mark Eid el-Mawlid, Distinguished Professor Amidu Olalekan Sanni, Chief Imam of Lagos State University, urged Nigerians to adopt the ideals and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, emphasizing his role as a model for humanity.
Professor Sanni referenced Michael H. Hart’s renowned work, The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History, which ranks Prophet Muhammad as the most influential figure, recognizing him as the only person to be supremely successful in both religious and secular realms.
The Chief Imam used the occasion to remind Muslims worldwide that the Prophet’s mission transcends religious identity and should be a guide for all, especially the political class. He critiqued the current state of governance in Nigeria, calling on leaders to embrace the Prophet’s vision of justice, compassion, and placing competent individuals in positions of authority, as outlined in the Qur’an 21:107.
In his message, Professor Sanni called on the global Islamic community to use the Prophet’s birthday as a moment to join efforts in addressing global humanitarian crises, particularly in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan. He also highlighted the need for action on the flood disasters affecting Nigeria and urged local governments to take proactive measures.
Professor Sanni condemned corruption, kidnappings, and human trafficking, urging religious leaders and Nigerians to reject such practices, as they run counter to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.
He concluded his message with prayers for divine guidance for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Lagos State government, and the leadership of Lagos State University under the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello.
