The Federal Government has warned Nigerians about the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

According to a statement from Umar Muhammed, the Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), controlled water discharges from the dam began on September 17. The water release will start at 100m³/s and is expected to gradually increase to 1000m³/s over the next seven days, depending on inflow from the Garoua River.

The statement emphasized that the gradual release is designed to avoid exceeding the Benue River’s capacity and prevent major flooding in Nigeria. However, states along the Benue River, including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, and others, have been urged to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to address potential flood risks.

Muhammed assured the public that there is no immediate cause for concern, as current water levels remain within safe limits. NIHSA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates to minimize the risk of flooding in affected regions.
