Former Gabonese President Ali Bongo has announced his exit from politics, a year after being ousted by a military coup.
In a letter to the nation, the 65-year-old expressed his “definitive renunciation of any national ambition” while calling for the release of his wife and son, currently detained on corruption charges.
Bongo’s announcement raises questions about possible negotiations with the military rulers for his family’s freedom.
Following a stroke in 2018, his health became a concern ahead of the contested 2023 elections.
The coup, led by Gen Brice Oligui Ngeuma, was celebrated domestically but condemned internationally.
While Bongo has been allowed to remain in Libreville since his release from house arrest, Gen Nguema has offered him the option to leave the country.
