In a major step towards advancing the Bakassi Deep Seaport project in Cross River State, key stakeholders have officially pledged their support and oversight for its realization.
Representatives from the Africa Export-Import Bank (Afrexim), Arise Integrated Industrial Platforms (ARISE IIP), the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA), the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Customs, the Nigerian Shippers Council, the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, and local community leaders expressed their commitment in the presence of Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, and other key officials.
During the endorsement ceremony, Governor Otu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to the project, which operates under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. He described the Bakassi Deep Seaport as a “bold and courageous statement of collective aspiration” for the people of Cross River State, highlighting its crucial role in driving economic prosperity.
“The realisation of this project is a top priority for my administration,” Governor Otu declared, stressing the importance of transparency and the active participation of all stakeholders.
The event aimed to foster dialogue between key entities such as regulators, security agencies, investors, community leaders, and civil society organisations. A key moment was the signing of the Statement of Endorsement by the stakeholders, officially recognising them as Bakassi Deep Seaport Brand Ambassadors, affirming their unified commitment to the project.
Governor Otu expressed confidence that this collaboration would remove any obstacles and accelerate progress towards the seaport’s completion. Seen as a transformative initiative for the region, the Bakassi Deep Seaport is expected to significantly boost trade, create employment opportunities, and open up new business prospects.
“We are ready to work with all stakeholders to ensure the success of this project. You can count on my unwavering support,” the Governor assured.
The Obong of Calabar, represented by Etubom Architect Bassey Eyo Ndem, also voiced support for the project. Additional endorsements came from the Vice President of Afrexim Bank, Zitto Alfayo; the Vice President of ARISE IIP, Suren Abeywickrema; the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy; ICRC Director General Dr. Jobson Ewalefoh; and representatives from the Nigerian Navy and Customs.
Notable figures at the event included State Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, and Senators representing Cross River South and Central Districts, alongside members of the House of Representatives.
The engagement was widely praised as a vital step forward, with all stakeholders expressing confidence in the state government’s ability to deliver on its promises.
