Former Nigerian international goalkeeper, Peter Fregene has died at the age of 77 after a prolonged battle with health issues.

Fregene, who played for Nigeria in the 1968 Olympics, passed away peacefully in the presence of his wife, Tina, and two of his children. The news was confirmed by former Green Eagles captain, Segun Odegbami, who shared, “Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene passed on to meet his creator, surrounded by his family.”

Fregene, renowned for his agility and quick reflexes, had been struggling with illness for years. Despite support from generous Nigerians for his treatment, his condition worsened, highlighting the lack of proper support for retired athletes in Nigeria.

Odegbami expressed gratitude to those who helped and paid tribute to Fregene, saying, “Good night, ‘Apo’. Rest in peace.”
