President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has highlighted a significant choice for Nigerian motorists: pay N1,000 per litre for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) or switch to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) at a much lower rate of N200 per Standard Cubic Meter.
The President made this statement during a meeting with executives of the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO) at the State House in Abuja, led by Director Mr. Ramesh Kasangra. According to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s drive for cleaner and more affordable fuel alternatives for Nigerians.
He emphasized the introduction of incentives to encourage commercial motorists to convert their vehicles from petrol to gas at no cost under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI). This initiative aims to reduce Nigeria’s dependency on petrol and promote CNG as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective fuel.
“Nigerian motorists can now choose between petrol at N1,000 per litre or CNG at N200 per Standard Cubic Meter,” Tinubu said, praising NIPCO’s investments in the campaign to transition to CNG and its alignment with the government’s energy diversification strategy.
Tinubu stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in driving the country’s energy transition, encouraging NIPCO to continue expanding CNG infrastructure across the nation. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a favorable environment for private-sector investment to enhance energy efficiency and economic growth.
Mr. Kasangra expressed gratitude for the government’s support of the CNG sector and reaffirmed NIPCO’s commitment to further investment. NIPCO has already invested over N100 billion in pipeline development and building CNG stations nationwide, ensuring the accessibility of CNG for Nigerians.
