Nigeria and Atalanta star Ademola Lookman is set to carry the pride of Africa as the continent’s sole representative at the prestigious Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris today Monday 28th October 2024.

The 27-year-old forward enters the spotlight in sensational form after an outstanding performance in Atalanta’s 6-1 victory on Saturday, where he scored twice and contributed two assists before his 56th-minute substitution.

Lookman’s nomination is a remarkable milestone, making him the only African player shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or this year. “It’s special to be on the list, and even more special being the only African,” Lookman shared with BBC Sport Africa.

“This year has been full of great accomplishments, both with my club and my country. Being recognized among the contenders is a tremendous achievement.”

The former England youth international’s impressive form follows a history-making season where he became the first player since 1975 to score a hat-trick in a European final, leading Atalanta to their first-ever Europa League title with a victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

“That night was unforgettable,” Lookman recalled. “We managed it in an amazing way because Leverkusen was on fire that season. These are the moments you dream about.”

Since joining Atalanta in August 2022, Lookman has made an extraordinary journey under coach Gian Piero Gasperini, thriving in Italy’s northern region and embracing a fresh football culture.

“Stepping out of my comfort zone is never easy, but I’m open to learning and constantly striving to improve – not just as a player, but as a person too,” he said.

The Super Eagles forward is also the strong frontrunner for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, where he faces competition from compatriot William Troost-Ekong and eight other nominees.

Despite his individual success, Lookman remains focused on the team’s goals, especially with Nigeria’s national team. His pivotal contributions helped Nigeria reach the 2023 AFCON final, where they finished as runners-up to host nation Ivory Coast.

“I’m excited about what’s ahead because I’m always aiming for more,” Lookman added. “I’m never fully satisfied – that’s my mindset. Let’s keep pushing for greatness.”
