Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, arrived in Azerbaijan on November 11, 2024, to join global leaders and environmental advocates at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Mudavadi, a key figure in Kenya’s climate action and sustainability agenda, will participate in critical discussions aiming to advance international commitments to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.

Mudavadi’s arrival at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, Azerbaijan, was marked by a ceremonial welcome led by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Health, Teymur Musayev, alongside other government officials.

His participation underscores Kenya’s commitment to addressing pressing environmental issues, especially those affecting African nations, which are disproportionately impacted by climate change.

COP29 is expected to address topics including carbon emissions reductions, climate finance for developing countries, strategies for adapting to climate change, and global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. For Kenya, issues related to drought resilience, renewable energy development, and funding for sustainable agricultural practices are top priorities.

Mudavadi’s presence aims to strengthen Kenya’s voice on these matters, pushing for greater international support to mitigate climate risks impacting the African continent.

Mudavadi will also meet with leaders from various countries, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and support for climate adaptation strategies in Africa. His engagements are set to foster alliances that will contribute to achieving Kenya’s climate goals under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and support the broader African climate agenda.
