The Plateau State Police Command has dismissed fears of a bomb scare that sparked panic among residents in Jos on Tuesday.
Initial reports suggested an explosion had occurred, but the police clarified that they had safely detonated suspected explosive devices, averting any potential harm.
According to the police, three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were reportedly found in the crowded terminus area and Abuja market within the city. A witness recounted that the police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team responded swiftly to a distress call, neutralizing one device on the verge of detonation and safely removing two others, which helped prevent any potential casualties or damage.
In an official statement, Plateau State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, explained that the bomb scare was ultimately false. Authorities were initially alerted to a suspicious shallow hole believed to contain an IED near the Murtala Mohammed Way beside the old JUTH fence. Acting quickly, Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, mobilized bomb technicians to secure the area and assess the site.
Upon thorough examination by the EOD unit, it was determined that the hole was clear of any explosives. Commissioner Adesina and senior officers later visited the scene for further evaluation, reassuring the community of its safety.
