The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a sweeping victory in the Ogun State Local Government elections, claiming all 20 chairmanship seats across the state.
The announcement was made by Babatunde Osibodu, Chairman of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), at the Commission’s headquarters in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.
Osibodu disclosed that the APC also emerged victorious in all 236 wards of the state. A total of 613,156 votes were cast in the chairmanship election conducted across the 20 local government areas.
However, the outcome has been met with backlash from opposition parties, with the Labour Party leading the call for the nullification of the results. During a press conference in Abeokuta, the state capital, Biodun Jagun, Chairman of the Labour Party in Ogun State, described the election as a sham, accusing OGSIEC of failing to conduct a credible process.
“There was no election whatsoever in virtually all the polling units in Ogun State. OGSIEC officials were nowhere to be seen in over 90% of the polling units, and there were no election materials at the polling units as of 1:30 pm. In the few polling units where materials arrived, they were incomplete and only delivered around 1 pm, instead of the scheduled start time of 8 am,” Jagun alleged.
The Labour Party rejected the announced results and demanded the cancellation of the entire exercise, threatening legal action if their demands are not met. “We call on OGSIEC to cancel the election for being in clear violation of the electoral guidelines of Ogun State Electoral Law. If this demand is ignored, we will take the necessary legal steps to challenge this charade in court,” Jagun added.
The polls featured 19 political parties, including the APC, Labour Party, People’s Democratic Party, Social Democratic Party, and others. Despite the widespread participation, complaints of electoral irregularities and logistical failures dominated the opposition’s narrative.
