Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has initiated the construction of an intra-city rail network to connect Maiduguri and its environs, marking the first project of its kind by any government in Nigeria’s 19 northern states.

The first phase of the project will include 12 designated terminals across Maiduguri, linking key areas such as markets, schools, public spaces, and economically strategic locations.

The network is designed to ease passenger and goods movement, boost economic activities, and expand economic corridors across the state.

During an inspection of the proposed rail terminals and routes alongside the implementation partner, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), the state’s Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, revealed that feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments, and community consultations are ongoing to ensure the project’s success.

Once completed, the project aims to revolutionize transportation in Maiduguri by providing a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative, while complementing other infrastructure projects such as the 113-kilometre Maiduguri East, West, and South ring road expansions.

Zulum’s administration has also introduced electric and gas-powered taxis and buses at subsidized rates for Maiduguri residents to alleviate the impacts of transportation and living costs following the removal of fuel subsidies.

This innovative rail project is part of Zulum’s broader commitment to restoring peace, fostering economic growth, and rebuilding infrastructure across Borno State after over a decade of devastation caused by the Boko Haram insurgency.
