In a significant development, four members of the House of Representatives have defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, made the announcement on the floor of the green chamber on Thursday, marking a notable shift in the country’s political landscape.
The four LP candidates that defected on the floor of the House on Thursday are from four states: Kaduna, Imo, Edo and Cross River.
The lawmakers are Chinedu Okere (Owerri Municipal/Owerri North/Owerri West Constituency), Mathew Donatus (Kaura Federal Constituency of Kaduna), Akiba Bassey (Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Constituency) and Esosa Iyawe (Oredo Federal Constituency of Edo).
This defection is the latest in a series of movements within Nigeria’s political parties.
The 2023 Nigerian House of Representatives election saw the APC emerge with a majority, winning 176 seats, while the Labour Party secured 35 seats.
The defection of these four lawmakers is likely to further bolster the APC’s position in the House.
