Dignitaries from across Nigeria’s political and diplomatic space gathered at the Murtala Muhammed Arcade in Abuja to honor the late former Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed, on the anniversary of his assassination in 1976.

The event reflected on his “brief but very remarkable” leadership, which had a lasting impact on Nigeria’s political history.

Representing President Bola Tinubu was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, while former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, and the Ambassador of Angola were also in attendance.

General Muhammed’s administration was known for its strong anti-corruption stance, decisive reforms, and commitment to national discipline.

During his 200-day tenure, he implemented sweeping reforms, including dismissing over 10,000 public officials accused of corruption, creating seven new states, and planning a transition to civilian rule.
