Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced the nomination of Mohamed Janabi as the country’s candidate for the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa position.
Janabi, a renowned cardiologist and current Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, also serves as the president’s advisor on health and medical affairs. His nomination follows the passing of Faustine Ndugulile, the WHO Regional Director-elect, on November 27 in India, where he was receiving medical treatment. Ndugulile had been elected to the position during the 74th WHO General Assembly in August and was set to take office in March 2025.
Speaking at a swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed leaders in Zanzibar, President Hassan expressed confidence in Janabi’s extensive healthcare expertise and leadership capabilities. She revealed that his nomination was the result of a careful review of the credentials of five potential candidates.
If elected, Janabi will bring a wealth of experience to the role as the region continues to navigate significant healthcare challenges.
