President Mnangagwa Marks First Visit to SADC Secretariat Headquarters in Botswana

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Botswana for his inaugural visit to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat Headquarters since assuming the role of Chairperson of the regional bloc. The visit highlights his dedication to advancing SADC’s strategic goals and promoting greater regional integration.

Mnangagwa was received with warmth by Botswana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Phenyo Butale, Botswana’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Sarah Molosiwa, and Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Botswana, Henry Mukonoweshuro.

This visit underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP 2020-2030) and Vision 2050, focusing on industrial development, infrastructure growth, and human capital development to propel economic progress in Southern Africa. The key pillars of the RISDP include:

  • Industrial Development and Market Integration: Encouraging regional trade and industrial expansion.
  • Infrastructure Development: Building infrastructure to support regional connectivity.
  • Social and Human Capital Development: Improving education, health, and skills within the region.

Upon his arrival, President Mnangagwa was welcomed with a military guard of honor, emphasizing the significance of the occasion. His visit includes high-level briefings, meetings with SADC officials, and presiding over two major events: the official handover of the new SADC Secretariat Headquarters building and the groundbreaking ceremony for the SADC Regional Logistics Depot.

The visit underscores Mnangagwa’s leadership on issues like economic integration, infrastructure development, and sustainable growth, reaffirming Zimbabwe’s commitment to the collective goals of SADC. As Chair, Mnangagwa is poised to lead the bloc towards achieving Vision 2050, reinforcing SADC’s role as a pillar of regional unity and development.
