The victims were reportedly returning to Doma in Nasarawa State after attending a market in Ocholonya on Saturday when their wooden boat capsized.

According to Adanyi, a resident of Ocholonya, the ill-fated boat was carrying traders, predominantly women and children, from Odenyi in Nasarawa State when the tragic incident occurred.

Agatu Local Government Chairman, Melvin James, confirmed the accident on Sunday, expressing fears that the death toll might exceed 20. He revealed that local divers had already recovered several bodies, although he was awaiting an official update for the exact number of casualties.

James further stated that the Nigerian Navy had been contacted to assist in the ongoing rescue efforts. Coordination was also underway with Nasarawa State officials to support the affected families.
