Kenya was plunged into darkness on Wednesday following a widespread power outage that disrupted electricity supply across most of the country. The blackout, which began at 1:28 a.m. local time (1028 GMT), affected East Africa’s largest economy and caused significant disruptions.
Kenya Power, the nation’s leading electricity utility, announced on social media platform X that the cause of the outage is still under investigation.
By 7:35 a.m. local time (0435 GMT), electricity had been restored to all affected areas.
This incident marks the latest in a series of recurring power outages Kenya has experienced over the past year. Kenya Power, which serves over 9.6 million customers, is yet to provide an explanation for these frequent disruptions.
The blackout also had a broader impact, significantly reducing internet connectivity across the country, according to NetBlocks, a global observatory that tracks internet access. Neighboring Tanzania also experienced connectivity issues during the outage, the observatory added.
Kenya’s power infrastructure remains under scrutiny as the nation grapples with these persistent energy challenges.
